Number formatting problem

I'm in Microsoft Word, revising an original document that
contains bullets and numbers. Each time I make any change
in a numbered item, the numbers immediately following that
one restart the numbering process. Say I'm revising item
#5 out of a 15-numbered list of items. As soon as I do
the revision, the number after that which should be 6
reverts to #1. If I save, then close the document, then
reopen it, the numbers are correct again. But I have to
repeat this process each time I make a revision.
