number next to Inbox is not correct number of emails

My Inbox continues to show an erroneous number of emails (as the bracketed
number of new and/or unopened emails). For example, 12 new emails received,
would normaly reduce to 0 as emails are opened or deleted, however, this
number is now not bearing any resemblence to that type of editing process. In
addition to this, a correspondent of some 8 years has tried to send me an
email with an 8MB attachment, and this has been rejected. Never happened
before.

What is wrong with my Outlook? I have sent the "Sender's" rejection email to
my ISP to see if they can solve it. Plus, I have contacted my PC security
provider, Norton/Symantec to see if they have any idea of what is happening.
To date no reply from either, so I'm wondering if anybody else has
encountered a similar problem?
