Number not Advancing

Linda

I have used Shauna Kelly to set up my numbering and it was
super except for this problem still.
This is what I am getting.
1.0 sdjfkalsjdfs
1.1 askdjflaskjfaskdf
1.1 djalskdfasjdfajsd
1.1 sjdfklasdkfasdkfj
1.1.1 asjlkdfjaksdjfasjdf
1.1.1 asjdklfajskldjfasjdfa
1.0 asjdkfjaskdjfasdkfa

My numbers are not advancing. It looks beautiful and the
indents and styles are working great, it just won't
advance the numbers.

I assume you did not type the numbers into the "Number format" box but
inserted them using the "Previous level" command (or chose the second pane
in the Outline Numbered list gallery, which already shows 1, 1.1, 1.1.1
numbering)?

I did type the numbers into the Number format box and have
nothing in the previous level box at this time. I was
assuming if you had something in this box it would have
your new number and the previous number, but my problem is
only that my numbers won't increase. Otherwise they look
great. What a problem. Please help?

Hi Linda:

You cannot TYPE numbers anywhere in this process. "Typed" numbers are text
characters, they do not increment.

You need to follow Shauna's instructions letter-by-letter :) You need to
ensure you insert the Word 'counters' in the number format. The counters
are little pieces of computer code that tell Word to generate the next
number in the sequence at output time. These it can increment.

Remove what you have in the number format box now, and re-insert it exactly
as Shauna describes.

Sometimes the quickest way out of these problems is to completely delete
what you have and start again the right way. Trying to hang onto what you
have already is often an exercise in frustration.

Cheers

Thanks so much. The point I kept missing and missing was
that I had typed the number in the format box. Your note
finally set in and my styles/numbering is working
perfect.
