Does a later version of MS Access and MS Excel than 2000
allow for a greater number of columns than 255 and 256
respectively?

I haven't heard that Office 2003 changes this either. While I can understand
(barely) the desire for more than 256 columns in an Excel spreadsheet, I
can't imagine a need for more than 255 columns in a single table in Access.
With proper database normalization, I'd be shocked if you can show me the
need for more than, say, 40 columns in a single table.
