Version: Older version
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

I have not changed any preferences.

Yesterday I could not open Word and was given this reason. I had to use a text editor all day.

Today Word opened up. This has happened several times this past month, usually letting me get in later in the day. Seems like something might be corrupted? Where do I look?

Nobody can offer anything menaingful unless you indicate exactly what
version of Office you're using - The menu selection of "Older Version"
discloses absolutely nothing. Also, it helps if you specify exactly what
version of Mac OS you're running it on.

If you have more than the allowed number of computers on your local network
running any component of Office at the same time this message will pop up.
It doesn't have to be Word on two computers, it can be Word on one and
Entourage on another. For the early version of Office v.X the limit was one
computer, later it was three I believe.

Yes: It means you have more than one computer on the same network that have
Microsoft Office installed using the same licence key.

Chances are it happens when your kids get home from school and login to the
"other" computer. You need to buy another licence for one of those
computers, or re-install the software with the correct licence key if you
have more than one.

There is no limit to the number of times you can install that version of
Office but only 1 installation can be active at a time, so the message is
most likely being generated because there is more than just the one.

Do you have Office installed on more than 1 Mac using the same Product Key?
If they're networked you can only run it on 1 Mac at a time. Since you must
be running 2001 in Classic I believe the same thing can happen if you've
installed an Upgrade version of Office (X, 2004,2008) in OS X on the same
Mac or another on the network. IOW, even on the same Mac, if you installed
an upgrade package in Tiger on that same Mac you can't run any Office app in
it & concurrently run either Office app in Classic.
