Number of Pages

Jane Meyer

I am currently using Word 2000 and in trouble when it
comes to Total Number of pages.

I work on long documents and in need of some assistance.
My first two pages consist of a front page title and the
2nd page is left blank for hard copy printing purposes.
The 3 page starts as page 1.

At the end of the document, I have inserted a field
called "NumPages" which prints out total number of pages.
However, I do not want the first 2 pages added. For
example, if I have a total of 50 pages, I just want Word
to display as Numpages = 48 and NOT 50. How does one
ommit the first 2 pages as they are NOT really part of the
document total number of pages.

I would appreciate your assistance.

Thanks. :)

I can tell you how to do this, but I must say first that by convention,
unless your front matter is copious enough to be numbered separately (with
lowercase roman numerals), the title page *is* page 1. So you could save
yourself a lot of trouble by just letting Word number the document
naturally, with the text starting on page 3.

If you are determined to do it the way you describe, however, here's what
you need instead of the NumPages field:

{ = { NUMPAGES } -2 }

Press Ctrl+F9 to insert the outer pair of field braces. Between them,
type
= - 2
Put the cursor between the equal sign and the minus. Press Ctrl+F9
again to get the inner pair of braces. Type NUMPAGES between them.
Finally, press F9 to update the field, which will collapse the field
code and display the page number.

1. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert the outside pair of field delimiters.

2. Between them, type

= -2

3. Between the equals sign and -2, press the Insert Number of Pages button
to get the NumPages field.
