I have Office 2007 Professional on my current computer and plan to buy a new
computer. The salesperson told me that my software can be installed on up to
3 different computers, but that is not my understanding. I know that is true
for Home and Student, but is it also true for Professional?

Hi Sandra,

With Office Professional you can install one copy on a desktop computer and another on a laptop - but Office can't be used on both
at the same time. The portable installation right can't be used on a desktop computer, either, though you are pemitted to install
the software on two laptops.

If you're 'retiring' the current PC, you're entitled to unistall it from that and re-install it on the new PC, and you can do this
any number of times. You'll might have to use phone activation, though. Also, retail licenses of Microsoft Office can only be
re-assigned to another device once every 90 days.

Thanks. I would prefer to install it on the new laptop for regular use and
leave it on the 'retired' laptop for emergency use if I have a problem with
the new one. I think I understand that is permitted from your answer.

Yes, that's what the Microsoft FAQ says.

I have read in a couple of places that there is a difference in licensing for
the downloaded Office Pro 2007 vs buying it in a retail box?

I read that if you buy the product in a retail box, you can put in on two
machines?

Is this correct?

E.g., my wife and I would put it on our two new laptops. (We have older
Office Pro software on our two old Thinkpads under XP pro, which we paid for
separately from IBM years ago, but we'll keep these around for awhile and not
upgrade them.)

You will also find purchasing a retail version from eg amazon is cheaper
than buying from MS online, and you get the disks without having to pay
extra.
A retail version of Pro is licensed for 2 devices, technically for use by
the same user
