Number rows consecutively in Excel

I am a real dummy when it comes to excel.

I have been trying to figure out how to number my rows consecutively,
however, when I delete a row I need the number to stay consecutive.

I am working a listing of data that is constantly updated and edited.

 

[Bob Phillips]

set the number as =row()

and copy down
