Number style applied to all paragraphs in document

When I use the Numbering button on the tool bar to apply numbering to a
(Normal styled) paragraph in a word doc, the numbering is applied to all of
the paragraphs in the doc. When I do a Ctrl+Z to undo the numbering is taken
off the other paragraphs and remains only on the paragraph that I initially
wanted the numbering on.

Does anyone know how to prvent this happening (as on 200+ page documents it
is locking my machine up for some minutes). Is it because the other styles
are based on the Normal style or have I corrupted the template on which I
base my docs or something entirely different....
