Numbered Headings in MS Word 2003

Usually number my headings through defining each one of them as a
style. Now, when I use (format bullets and numbering) to restart the
numbering of some heading in a long document, the command is ignored.
Does anyone know how to go around this? Generally how can one keep
the numbering of his heading consistent through a long document?

Thank you Suzanne. I have read Shauna Kelly's article with interest.
It is helpful. However, most of the time I need only simple headings.
I resort to outline headings on only few occasions. I have defined
heading 1 as a centered unnumbered title, heading 2 as a left
positioned unnumbered title, Heading three as left-positioned Latin
numbered title, Heading four as left position Capital letters numbered
title, Heading 5 as left positioned Arabic numerals numbered title and
so on. Something is causing the numbering to be unwieldy. When I try
to restart the numbering of a heading, sometimes it works and many
times nothing happens.

Hi Suzanne once again.
I went to the format/styles/each heading style/numbering and reset all
boxes available before redefining my styles. That caused the restart
command to work.
Thanks for the help and for the article too.
