numbered headings

I am using 4 levels of headings in my document. I want
the 4 levels to use a set amount of space between the
number and the text heading.

I want it to look like this, for instance:

1. Text 1
2. Text 2

Right now, I have:

1. Text 1
2. Text 2

Any ideas on how to remedy this? Thanks in advance.
