Numbered/lettered lists in a table

I am formatting a numbered & lettered list of headings in a multi-page table.

Question # 1: As I go to my next page, if my heading is continued from a
previous page (we’ll say with the heading of “G. Resourcesâ€), and I want the
same heading on the next page (of “G. Resources – (Continued)), how do I
keep the letter t stay at G? If I select the restarting, it goes to A. If I
select continuing, it goes to H. I know about using the customize box and
restarting at a different number/letter, but that’s a lot of work. Is there
any kind of shortcut? I tried to record a macro. I got it to work, but in
the macro, when it recorded me restarting the letter from H back to G in the
customizing box, that’s what stays in the macro. To apply the letter G to
every letter that I run the macro on, instead of simply going backwards once
in the alphabet. I tried my first attempt at editing a macro, and I didn’t
have great success.

It seems to me that you should be able to select and right-click any list
number or letter, and when your right-click menu appears and the
number/letter is grayed out, that you should be able to skew it up or down by
a certain key combo or macro function.

Question # 2: How do I continue a heading from the bottom of a table on one
page to the top of a table on the next page? Is there a way to do it
automatically? I’m not talking about copy and paste. I’m not thinking to
repeat the first heading on all the rest; no, just the last one on a page to
the first one on the next. It would be great if it formatted in “Continuedâ€
or something to that extent, as well.

Thanks for any help you may provide.

A macro could probably be programmed to do what you describe, as it's possible to
access the number represented by the letter. But I'd be concerned just how stable this
would be, in the long run... If I had to attempt what you describe, I'd be inclined to
investigate the use of SEQ fields. SEQ fields have a number of switches you can
include to control the numbering, and you can rely on them always working. (Automatic
numbering has a nasty tendency to reset itself.) Look up SEQ field in Word's help and
give it a try. If it seems a possibility, you can include a \* ALPHABETIC switch to
get the letters.

Thank you, Cindy. I'll try to give it a shot. Any suggestions for
continuing the same heading from one page to the next, but not on all pages?

Thanks again.

There isn't really any good solution for this. About the only thing you can do
is to use a macro to run over the table, from top to bottom, inserting a new
row with the information, as required. But depending on exactly what you want,
it could get rather tricky.
