Numbered/lettered styles

K

Kamran

I've created a style that using letters for numbering (a., b., c., etc.).
When I come to a new section of my document and I want to use the same style
and restart the numbering at "a." I right-click the letter, click "Restart
Numbering" on the pop-up menu, and immediately it reformats the style itself
and changes the indentation of all paragraphs using that style. Undo won't
change the paragraph format change. I've noticed this as a consistent
problem thoughout several versions of Word. I would really appreciate any
insight into this annoyance.

Hi Kamran

I don't recognise this as a regular problem and would guess that the problem
is in the document or template - especially if it has been around since Word
97 or 2000. You could try saving out to HTML (unfiltered), opening again and
resaving as a .doc.

Before you try that it might be worth resetting all the panes on Format >
Bullets and Numbering. Make sure, too, that you don't have the AutoFormat As
You Type options 'Automatic bulleted lists' 'Automatic numbered lists' or
'Define styles based on your formatting' checked, and that your numbered
style is not set to 'Automatically Update'.
