I think you might be talking about "Indenting" not "spacing", no?
The Word 97 spacing was a bug, known as the "Jason Tab".
In Word 2000 the thing works properly, but there's another bug.
The tab settings on the paragraph and the tab settings on the list template
(the numbering) conflict. What is supposed to happen is that when you set
the tab spacing and indents in the Format>Style>Modify>Format>Numbering
dialog, Word should overwrite the settings on the
Format>Style>Modify>Format>Paragraph dialog without telling you.
In Word 97 it didn't. In Word 2000 it does, but it hits the wrong ones.
They fixed it in Word 2002.
You need to be aware that you are dealing with two sets of tabs: one set by
the paragraph style and one set by the numbering list template. Unless you
have been knowledgeable enough to disassociate the style you are using from
the Normal style, your style will also inherit tab settings from Normal.
This is a very complex area. What is happening in the Numbering dialog is
the real thing: that's what you're going to get!
You need to keep your mind on the job and get all of the tab and indent
settings to correspond, beginning with Normal style, then the style in use,
then the numbering style, and finally, remove the directly-applied tabs from
the text if there are any.
Off you go to Shauna Kelly's excellent website and read until your head
hurts. Then read the rest of it
Cheers

I am troubleshooting problems with the spacing for a
simple numbered list. In Word 97, the spacing for a simple
numbered list was 0" for the number and .5" for the text.
In Word 2000, the default is .25" and .75" respectively.
If I change the indent spacing in the Customize window,
the default does not hold for that numbered option.
Any thoughts?
