Numbered list with sub-headings

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I am trying to use the outline number feature on Word 2008. I have used it many times before in order to have number sub-headings in my reports i.e. 1. Introduction. 1.1 Brief overview, however, since the most recent auto-update, I have been unable to get this function to work again.

Normally I would use the heading auto format for heading 1, 2 etc and then just press tab to change the numbering accordingly. That no longer works as it just moves the text and not the numbering. Also when I tab the text across prior to numbering, it skips 1.1 and goes straight to 1.1.1!

Any suggestions as to what I can do to rectify this?

If you use the built-in styles Heading 1 through Heading 9, it will all work
properly. If you apply the numbering without the styles, you can get
strange effects like this.

If you want numbering to work reliably in a formal document like a report,
you really have to abandon the simplistic tools such as tabs and autoformat
(in fact, it's important to turn them off...) and use proper formatting with
proper styles and list styles.

You must make sure that when you apply styles, you apply them to the WHOLE
paragraph. Word 2008 has introduced Linked Styles. Microsoft won't explain
what they are, but the bottom line is that the Heading Styles will not
support numbering unless you apply it to the paragraph mark as well as the
text in the paragraph.

If you do that, the document will be stable and maintainable ‹ you can work
on it through multiple editing sessions without things going wrong for
mysterious reasons.

Shauna Kelly has a good explanation here:

Hope this helps
