Numbered Lists

I am using Word 2003 upgraded from 97, and the documents occasionally get worked on at home with 2000

I have large documents with hundreds of separately numbered lists. Sometimes, when opening a document, numbered lists that were fine when the document was last closed have now renumbered so that new sections no longer begin with 1 but are sequentially numbered from previous lists. This may be the entire document, but is usually just a portion of it.

Also, sometimes Word will not allow "restart numbering" to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hi Mary Lee

Tools > Templates and Add-ins. Make sure that the box at "Automatically
update document styles" is **not** ticked. If this box is ticked, then Word
will copy the styles from the template every time you open the document.
That will cause all numbering (well, most) to start from 1, even if you've
told it to start from another number.

On re-starting numbering in lists, see
http://www.syntagma.demon.co.uk/FAQs/ListRestartMethods.htm

Hope this helps.
