numbered lists

I used to be able to use the numbered list facility to create numbered paragraphs with vertical spaces between the paragraphs. That does not now seem possible. The numbered list formatting wants to carry on the next number on the next line, making for a very cramped look. Any suggestions?

Apply the List Number style to the paragraphs, then format the style to
whatever spacing you like
