Numbered Lists

Numbered lists seem to take on a life and format of there own. Is there a way to edit an existing document and make numbered lists have a consistent format throughout the document?

I'll check it out. Thanks as this has been a mystery for years, but never spent the time to get to the bottom. I know its an issue for alot of my co-workers.
