Numbered outline doesn't save

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Hey,

I am formatting my PhD Thesis using Word for Mac 2008. I have a Mater File set up with a custom thesis template (all styles defined by me).

When I apply a numbered outline from the menu (defined with headings) it works fine, but when I save the document and open it again, the numbers are gone.

So when I open my master file, the outline numbering isn't there and I cannot include it in my table of contents.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Any help much appreciated,
Zbyszek.

Yeah, you're doing several things that I wouldn't do to get numbering to
work properly.

The first is that you are not using the built-in styles Heading 1 through
Heading 9. Those built-in styles have special properties that make
numbering work. Other styles do not (you can add them, but you have to know
what you are doing: much easier to simply use the built-in styles.

You can customise the formatting and the numbering of the built-in styles to
your taste, and if you do, your numbering will "just work".

Numbering cannot be stored in an external file properly, because Word 2008
does not correctly re-connect the numbering if the document already has text
in it.

So: You can create a numbering scheme in a template. If it IS a template
(not a copied document) then the numbering scheme will be transferred to any
new blank document you create from that template. But if the numbering is
not stored in a file of type "Template", or if you simply copy another file,
the numbering may not copy correctly.

If you have a template attached to documents, you MUST NOT use the
"Automatically update styles on open" command to attach the template if the
styles have numbering. Otherwise, the numbering will be broken each time
you open the document: this is probably what is happening to you.

Shaun Kelly describes the basics very well here:

A PhD Thesis is often a "major document" (you noticed, right?). So you
should either devote a couple of weeks to learning how to set it up
correctly in Word, or pay a Technical Writer to do that for you. It's too
risky to have it go wrong and miss your submission day...

Cheers
