numbered paragraphs in word document

P

Pehr Jansson

I am working on a document in which I want every paragraph to have a
paragraph number in the style [01], [02], etc. That's easy enough.
However, I want to have section headings like "1.0 nnnn", "1.1 mmmm"
as well as more ordinary paragraphs. I would like both the former and
the latter to bear the bracketted paragraph numbers, e.g.,

[01] 1.0 nnnn

[02] bla bla bla

[03] 1.1 mmm

[04] la la la la

when I set up a separate style for the headings as to my liking, Word
numbers those "paragraphs" independently from the pargraphs that
have the Paragraph style. Anyway to make them continue in the same
number sequence?

Numbering's very complicated, and the main person who understands it over on
the Mac side checks in to this group every day or so, but in the meantime,
start here:

For the section headings, see: How to create numbered headings or outline
numbering in your Word document
<URL: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html>
Not only the best, but the only way to set up Numbering so that it will work
and not break. Never use the Format | Bullets and Numbering dialog.
I'm not sure what mechanism governs paragraph numbering.

For further questions, the best place to ask and hope for a quick
authoritative response is the microsoft.public.word.numbering newsgroup.
The easiest way to access that is via Google, click on Groups, and using
their Advanced Groups Search to look for earlier discussions that might
address your problem could also be useful.

We try to be helpful here, but when it comes to numbering, there's just a
greater critical mass of experience (including lawyers who do this every
day) over on the general word.numbering group.
