Numbered Style not saving in template

I have a style called P-note. It's a numbered style, but
with Note instead of a number. This style is left at the
1" margin, and hanging indent to 1.25. I save the doc, and
say Yes to save it to the document template. When I close
the document and re-open it, the style I just created that
looked fine, is now indented 2 extra inches - the left
margin and the hanging indent. The rest of the document
and the styles are still OK.

I've reapplied the template and it's still wrong.

So I go back to the style P-note and I make the
adjustments to get it back indented where I want it. I
select the whole paragraph, choose Format/Styles and
Formatting. I select the drop-down for P-note and
say "Update style to match selection." It does. I then
choose Modify from the drop-down. Verify that everything
is as I would expect, make sure Automatically Update and
Add to Template are selected, click OK. Save the document,
say yes to save changes to the template.

Why isn't it saving the changes?

On Word version 2002 SP-2.

Thanks in advance
Jodie

How are you setting the margin and hanging indent? For a 'numbered' style,
these need to be set from Modify > Numbering for the style, not the
Paragraph dialog. Use the 'Outline Numbering' tab which has the fullest
dialog and gives you control over the left indent ('number position', tab,
and hanging indent separately.

I suggest you don't check 'Automatically update'. That just ensures that any
changes made later to any paragraph in that style (by you or Word's
numbering nuttiness) will update the style.

It appears that the problem was the Automatically Update -
I was selecting that check box. Working great now.

Thanks!
