Numbered styles

I think Suzanne Barnhill answered this question once upon a time, but I
can't find the original message or my notes on it. :-(

If I create a custom style in Word that includes numbering, whenever I use
that style in my document it "continues" numbering instead of "restarting,"
so I have to change it to "restart" every time. (And when I do that,
sometimes it reverts to the style on which it's based!) I am almost certain
there's a way to make it restart automatically. Am I right, and if so, what
is it?
