Numbering a document and continuing heading 5 from heading 1

I have a document that I've formatted using styles and formatting. I
have used Headings 1, 2, 3, & 4.
They are set up as:
1
1.1
1.1.1
1.1.1.1

I now have a section that I need to number and have set up heading #5
with the font, spacing, etc. to do it. However, it follows a heading
#1, there are no other sub headings under it. I went into the
customize outline dialog box (via Heading 1), I erased what Word had
defaulted for heading 5. I picked 'Level 1' for "Previous level
number" put a . and then for "Number style" picked '1, 2, 3'. I click
all the 'OK's and in my document it isn't formatted this way. This
section is under section 5. What I have is:

5 Name of Section
1.1 Name of subheading.

No matter what I've tried to do - it still just keeps putting in 1.1.
When I go back into the customize ouline dialog box, the 'Previous
level number' has changed itself to 'Level 4'. And I, being insane I
suppose, have tried changing it back to 'Level 1' and doing the 'OK's
and nothing changes. And when I go back in - it's back to 'Level 4'
again. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Try this:
Format>Style>Heading 1>Modify>Format>Numbering>Customize>More
Click 1 in the list of levels. Ensure that 'Link level to style:' is set to
'Heading 1'.
Click 5 in the list of levels. Ensure that 'Link level to style:' is set to
'Heading 5'. If necessary, set up the number format again as you did
before.
OK out of everything.
I suggest this because I suspect that your outline levels are not properly
linked to the styles.

Thanks Chad!! I had selected that a few times - and it kept reverting
back to (no style). Maybe just closing out of the program over nite
made it decide to not act up anymore!!!
