Numbering a list causes my system to hang

Adam Kahane

When I try to create a numbered list using Format/Bullets
and Numbering/Numbered (or simply use the Numbering
button), my system hangs, every time. I am using Word 2002
SP-2 running under Windows XP Porfessional. How can I fix
this?

Here's Office MVP Beth Melton's answer to a similar question:

It could be caused by some corruption in the Registry. Exit Word and in the
Registry drill down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

and delete/rename the entire "List Gallery Presets" key. Word will create a
new on upon starting.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should review
"Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the Registry
Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry file
command, export your selected branch, and then delete the key. That way if
you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the
deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.
