numbering and renumbering

I want to type activities for a lesson plan on one
document. They will cover an entire unit. I want to
pull up those I think I will use on day 1 and put them in
a lesson plan. I can take them to a new Word document
and use bullets and numbering to number them, but if I
pull too many or too few activities, I need to renumber.

Is there a way to number the activities beginning with
number 12. I would need that if I chose too few
activities and had to add some.

Basically, I want to know how to number and renumber. If
it is possible without bullets, that would be great.

I found the following directions on my computer at home.
It is XP. When I right click on a number, the
option "Restart Numbering " is not on the shortcut menu,
nor is "Continue Numbering." In addition, I will be on
Windows 98 at work.

Change the numbering sequence in lists
Do one of the following:

Restart numbering in the middle of a numbered list
In the numbered list, right-click the number that you
want to restart with 1, and then click Restart Numbering
on the shortcut menu.

Sequentially number lists separated by non-numbered text
Right-click the first number of the list that will
continue the numbering sequence, and then click Continue
Numbering on the shortcut menu.

The version of Windows is irrelevant here. What version of Word is this? If
you don't know, choose Help | About Microsoft Word. The version will be the
top line in the ensuing dialog.

At home I am working with XP. At work it is 2000. I
have typed what I want on a seperate document. I copy
and paste part of it to another document and number it
there so if I mess up I'll still have the original. It
is numbering every line. Usually there are three single
spaced lines per activity. Then I double space and write
one, two, or three lines for the next activity. Is there
a way to number it without doing it manually?
Thanks.

Unless you're using line numbering (different from auto numbering), you
shouldn't be getting a number for every line unless you're pressing Enter.
If you let the lines wrap naturally to form a paragraph, you should get only
one number per paragraph. If you want continuation lines, then you need
unnumbered paragraphs. The easiest way to do this is to use the List Number
style for the numbered paragraphs and the List Continue style for the
unnumbered ones. If you're unfamiliar with styles, see
