numbering and styles in 07

I am working in 07 and have noticed a problem that my 1000 users keep
encountering.
You apply a style to several different headings.
You then apply numbering to some of those formatted headings.
THe style automatically adds the numbering to itself (as viewed in the style
gallery)
If you click Undo once, the numbering remains on the document but removes
itself from the style.
Is there a way to keep the style from modifying itself automatically?

Display the Styles panel (click the Styles launcher in the lower right
corner of the Styles section in the Home tab, or press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S).
Right click the style of interest, and choose Modify. Remove the check next
to "Automatically update".

Alternatively, you can also access the Modify button from the Apply Styles
box. Press Ctrl+Shift+S to the Apply Styles box, drop down the desired
style, then click Modify.
