Numbering and Styles

Fran

I have a template that uses styles with outline numbering.

1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3

If someone accidently backspaces and deletes the automatic
numbering

1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
Heading 3

and tries to reapply the Heading 3 style the style seems
to redefine itself and all the numbering is removed.

Is this a bug?
Is there a way to lock the style definitions so they can't
automatically change?

Thanks!

If you try to reapply Heading 1, you get a message box asking whether you
want to reapply the style or redefine it. Making the wrong choice can be
disastrous. A better way to reapply the style is to press Ctrl+Q.

Thanks! Ctrl-Q works.

However, I am not asked whether I want to reapply or
redefine it. I failed to mention that I am using Word
2002, perhaps that feature is not in this version.

Hi Fran

This feature is in Word 2002, but Word only asks if you want to re-apply or
re-define the style if

(a) you have ticked the box at Tools > Options > Edit > Prompt to Update
Style

and

(b) you re-apply the style either by using the Style box on the menu bar or
by using the Styles and Formatting Pane. If you use any of the other method
to apply a style (eg a toolbar button or a keyboard shortcut), Word doesn't
pop up the "do you want to re-define the style?" box.

Hope this helps.
