Numbering causes Word 2002 to stop responding

On too frequent occasions when creating a numbered list,
Word 2002 stops responding and consumes 100% CPU.

I like to understand what is causing this so that I stop
loosing endless hours of work.

Clearly this is a bug of some kind but how can I diagnose
what is happening to assist in preventing its reoccurance.

Any assistance would be most appreciated

Are you using List Styles or List-based styles, or just winging it
with default formatting? List-based styles are the best way to go. See
