Numbering figures etc. by chapter

Reluctantly Speaking

Is it possible to number figures, tables etc. by chapter in the form of
"Figure 1.1" where the first number is the chapter number and the second is
the number of the figure within that chapter. Is it then possible to change
the numbering in an Appendix, to give the form "Figure A.1" where the first
letter is the appendix number and the number is the figure number within that
appendix?
