Numbering figures

Can anyone help me please,

I am having trouble numbering figures in Word 97. When I
use Insert Caption to label figures corresponding to text
boxes these take on the label Figure 0 (other figures
corresponding to inported jpgs etc are labeled correctly
1,2,3 etc). When I then try to add a cross reference to
such Figure 0's the effected items do not appear in the
list of figures to choose from. Am I doing something
wrong?

They target items may not be list items. Regardless, always set a
bookmark to the target of your cross-reference and x-ref to that
instead.
