numbering foot notes

It seems that I have two parallel foot note numberings. I
received a text with footnotes and now I'm trying to add
new information to it, but I can't make the file to
continue the original foot note numbering. It simply
starts with 1 again and then continues. So, I have two
foot notes number 1, 2, 3, etc. How can I make change
this?

Are you sure the existing footnotes are actually automatic footnotes (the
numbers haven't been inserted manually or converted to text) or that they
are even footnotes and not endnotes?
