Numbering format in XP

Libi

In a document, there is a series of numbered paragraph. I
want to underline the number only of paragraph 3 only. In
Word 97, I simply select the paragraph mark of this
paragraph and apply underline.

When I try to do this in 2000 or XP, it doesn't work. I
tried to select the number instead and apply underline,
but then all of my numbered paragraphs were underlined.

Any suggestions?

Hi Libi

This may seem a bit heavy handed, but should be solid:

In paragraph 3, use a style that does not include numbering but does match
the tab and indent positions of the style you use for the numbered
paragraphs.

Insert a LISTNUM field at the start of paragraph 3, followed by a tab. This
should insert 3, and your next paragraph should continue at 4. Underline the
LISTNUM number.

If you are not using styles you can probably achieve the same effect with
direct formatting, but I never trust numbering in these circumstances
<sigh>. In this case, you might prefer to use LISTNUMs for all your numbers,
rather than mixing and matching fields and paragraph numbering.
