Numbering format lost after SAVE

I spent a long time numbering a document in the format I
wanted 1.
2.
a)
b)
etc.

I saved the document but when I went back to the document
later all the numbers had been reset back to roman
numerals (I assume this is the default). Where do I
change the defaults for the program (user preferences??)
I hate Roman numerals!

Hi Pam

First, you might make sure that Tools > Templates and addins does not have
'Update document styles' set - if it has this will reset the styles in your
document to match the attached template.

More likely, though is simply that you are caught by one of the many Word
numbering oddities. To set up stable numbering, you need to use styles, and
follow Shauna Kelly's instructions at
