Numbering Function corrupts text

Word's numbering function makes errors and corrupts documents. If I attempt
to number this list of 5 names:

Carol Jones
Mike Smith
O J Simpson
I. P. Daily
Robin Harris

It comes out like this:

1.. Carol Jones
2.. Mike Smith
3.. J Simpson
I. P. Daily
4.. Robin Harris

The "O" is deleted, the "I" is indented, and Word now says there are only 4
names!
I routinely try to number 9,000-line documents, and inevitably they contain
words like these, so the line count is always wrong. How can I use the
Numbering function without this mess?
Thanks!
