Numbering in a non-protected section of a protected document

I'm using Word 2002 (10.6764.6735) SP3.

This is the first time that I've tried to create a protected form template
that has multiple sections, some protected and some not. I'm discovering
that even in non-protected sections, when the protection is active, it's not
possible to restart the numbering for a new list. Are there any workarounds
for this, or is it inherent in the protection process?

Thanks,

Judith

Thanks, Margaret. In my situation, the VBA options aren't going to be of
benefit, since the idea is to create a template that less-advanced users can
utilize while protecting most of the formatting except in specific sections.
They're not going to be ideal candidates for using macros or programming
script.

The option described in "Restarting list numbering using a higher level
style" sounds like it might do what's needed, and since I'm creating the
template and instructions before anything else is done, I can create a style
to use as the restart indicator, but I can't readily see in MS Word help what
to set up on the style that will act to restart the numbering, so I can't
test how well it will work in the protected document yet.

Can you direct me to a document that discusses precisely how to set up a
list to work this way?

Thanks again,

Judith

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ListRestartFromStyle.htm

Basically just follow the method of work described by Shauna Kelly at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html, starting
from the unnumbered style that you want to restart the list numbering -
either a real style (it can be Body Text, for instance) or a dummy style.

Instead of setting up heading numbering, remove the number altogether from
the top level. For the second level, choose the number format for your
numbered list, and link to List Number or whatever style you use - and so on
for lower levels. Make sure all levels are set to restart on the level
above.
