Numbering in linked file continues from previous

Hi,

I have a document that has numbered items using the Word auto number
feature. It looks like this...

1. Item one.
2. Item two.
3. Item three.

Then I have a linked file (Word document) that has some text and then its
own numbered list. Like this...

Some text here.
1. Link Item one
2. Link Item two
3. Link Item three

When I view the main document, the linked document numbered items come in
Continuing the item numbering of the list in the main document instead of
starting over. Looks like this...

Some text here.
4. Link Item one
5. Link Item two
6. Link Item three

I've checked the linked document and I don't even have the option to
continue previous numbering, because there's no other numbering in that
document. But when it is linked in, it continues the previous list.

How do I tell the linked document to start its numbering over again?

One additional factor. The above is obviously a simplification of what the
real document looks like, and in fact there are multiple linked documents
that come into the main document, each with their own numbered lists.
Everything worked fine for the first five linked documents, but on the sixth,
it continues the numbering of the previous (fifth) linked numbered list.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
