numbering in tables

I have a mail merge data file set up in a table format for certificates that
I issue to students completing a course. Each certificate needs to be
sequentially numbered. I have a field now that I manually update each time
I print new certificates. Is there a way to automatically increment the
numbers for each new certificate? Thanks for any help!!
