You can use either a ListNum or a SEQ field for this.
Insert the field beside the first word, get it formatted to your
satisfaction, then copy it. Then use Find>Replace to search for every space
in the document and replace it with a space and "The clipboard contents".
That will add the field you just created beside every word.
I would use the ListNum field, described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/162895
That's yet another one they left out of the Word help in an effort to save
money.
The only way to get the Help improved in Office for Mac is to make vigorous
use of the "Was this information helpful?" boxes at the bottom of each help
topic.
Search for what you want: if you don't find it, click "No" to "Was this
information helpful?" then tell them what you were looking for.
That is the ONLY way to get the help fixed. We went into this at Microsoft
in some detail, and the only way to get it fixed is to use "Was this
helpful" or "Help: Send Feedback".

I need to be able to number individual words in an Word document. I need this
as i have to analyze and be able to state whether they are: Verbs, Nouns,
Adverbs, etc. This has then to be presented to my Tutor for a University
project on Literacy.
