Numbering Issue

Havent never done this so its probably easy for someone!

Im in Word 2003 and I have got a document that has an index that needs to
use roman numerals, then the rest of the documnet needs to start at 1 and go
from there.
I have tried a break inbetween the two and it doesnt work, it inserts a
blank page, but it wont stop the page count! What am I doing wrong, other
than coming to work?
