Numbering lost in Heading Outline when open Doc

A word 2000 document was saved with 2003 and then reopen
document and the Headings are gone. How do I get them
back.

Example:
1. Word 2000
7.0 Procedure
7.1 Description
a. Item 1

2.Open Document with word 2003
3.Save and close the document.
4.Open the document in word 2003
5.The Document looks like this now:
7.0 Procedure
Description
Item 1

I have several hundred documents with 20-30 pages of
heading outlines. Help

Just a long shot....
Right after opening the document, have you tried CTRL-A (Select all) and
CTRL-Q (Reset paragraphs)?

It's possible this was caused by having 'Update document styles
automatically' checked in Tools > Templates and Add-Ins.

If that's not it, then Word 2003 must be a bit more sensitive to whatever of
the many numbering 'gotchas' you have in your document. You'll need to set
up the styles following the instructions in

If we are talking about 100s of documents, you'll want to think about
recording a macro or setting the styles up once in a template and updating
the documents from that (either using Tools > Templates and Add-Ins or the
Organizer - you'll need to test which works most reliably for you).
