Numbering more than paragraphs, inline numbers

Tom Alsberg

Hi there.

How can I create lists of elements which are not necessarily
single paragraphs?

I.E. I wish to create (nested) lists of (sub-)sections, where each
section can contain multiple paragraphs, tables, displayed equations,
figures, etc.

Actually, perhaps what I want more is a section/heading structure,
where the headings are formatted as list numbers. Something like:

Subject (1): Contains:
A. Text, text, and more text.
B. Some more text.
C. A table.

Subject (2): Just spans a few paragraphs.
Second paragraph.
Third paragraph.

Subject (3): A. Something
B. (i) As long as nothing else interferes
(ii) Or as long as this works
(iii) I can write ((sub-)sub-)sections
(iv) And insert tables and figures in them.

Also, how can I have a deeper level in the list start in the same
line as an element above it? I.E. if I have two levels - (1), (2),
...., and a., b., ..., I want to divide item (n) into a., b., ...,
without a line containing just (n)? I.E., instead of:

(1)
A. First sub-element
B. Second sub-element
(2)
A. First sub-element
B.
(i) First sub-sub-element
(ii) Second sub-sub-element
(iii) Third sub-sub-element
(iv) Fourth sub-sub-element
C. Third sub-element
(3) Third Element

Something like:

(1) A. First sub-element
B. Second sub-element
(2) A. First sub-element
B. (i) First sub-sub-element
(ii) Second sub-sub-element
(iii) Third sub-sub-element
(iv) Fourth sub-sub-element
C. Third sub-element
(3) Third Element

Thanks, any help appreciated,
-- Tom

G'Day Tom,

The fastest way to answer your question is a demo;
Please create a new document with the following 9
paragraphs:

Item 1¶
Item 1.1¶
Item 1.2¶
Item 1.2.1¶
Item 1.2.2¶
Item 2¶
Item 2.1¶
Item 2.1.1¶
Item 3....¶

Select all nine of them, and click the "Numbering" button.
Select the 4 paragraphs Item 1.1 .........Item 1.2.2,
hit the TAB key on the keyboard.
Select the 2 paragraphs Item 1.2.1 and Item 1.2.2,
Press TAB
again.
Place the insertion point before "Item 2.1", Press TAB once
Place the insertion point BEFORE "Item 2.1.1", Press TAB twice.

Experiment further with TAB and SHIFT + TAB

Select all again,
Format>Bullets and Numbering
Outline Numbered (tab)
Try the options including CUSTOMIZE (button)

NB Everytime you hit ENTER, you begin a new Item. Use
TAB and/or SHIFT+TAB to set the level of that item. To
have multiple paragraphs in an Item, use SHIFT+ENTER.

Hi Pat:

Your method constructs an Outline Numbered List and applies it as direct
formatting. While it will work in some circumstances, it falls over when
the user needs un-numbered paragraphs between the numbers.

I am aware that you can use a work-around of using Shift/Enter to create
line-feeds instead of paragraphs, but that won't suit the current user's
application, unless he has no leading on his styles.

I also get pretty jumpy when you suggest using the Customise button on a
list template that is not attached to a set of styles: that leads to a
document with an extremely short life-expectancy, which again, I suspect
does not suit this particular user's application :)

So I concur with the first answer: ListNum fields are more appropriate in
this specific instance.

Best Cheers
