Numbering not continuing previous list

This probably sounds like a novice question, but I'm having trouble getting
simple lists to continue numbering from a previous list. My problem looks
like this:

1 Text here
1.1 More text
1.2 More text
2 A little more text
3 Some more text

A paragraph of normal non-numbered text here.

1 This numbered item refuses to continue from the previous list, no matter
how many times I tell it to.

To add to my problem, this occurs about 50% of the time. Sometimes Word
will play nicely and continue my previous list, and other times it won't.

Anyone able to help me?
