Numbering outside page margins

I have recently installed Word 2000 on an XP pc. On a
number of docs, which display correctly on all other
machines, the paragraph numbering now appears outside of
the page margins, in the page left "gutter" so to speak.

Is there a default setting stored in the normal template
which can be adjusted or is this a product of some other
error.

I'm not sure why this would affect the same doc on different machines, but
if numbering is inserted using Insert | Page Numbers, then the { PAGE }
field is in a frame, and that frame is relatively easy to dislodge
accidentally. It is initially inserted at the left or right margin (as
selected in the dialog), but if the page margins are later changed
(increased), it might well stay in the same place, making it outside the
margins. It's generally more satisfactory to insert page numbering in the
header or footer using the Insert Page Number button on the header and
footer toolbar; this gives you more control over placement.
