Numbering rows for sorting

My spreadsheet has 1000 rows. I want to number the rows
so that I can undo a sort after the fact. The only way I
know to number the rows is to do so manually (too labor
intensive) or to put one in the first row and then set up
a formula so that each row is equal to one plus the
previous row. Is there some way I can number the
rows "automatically" and then have the numbers become
text such that they will never change? Thanks for the
help.

Hi

Enter 1 in the first cell. Fill down (that's dragging downwards with the mouse the tiny
black square in the lower right corner of the cell) using the /right/ mousebutton. When
completed, select "fill series" in the following popup menu.

. . . and if the column you are AutoFilling is alongside other data, you
can double-click the little black button in the bottom right-hand corner of
the cell and it will fill down on its own.
