Numbering spacing problem

With both Word default numbering, or my own style I have the following
problem:
** Incorrect
1. xxx
2. xxx
a. yyy
b. yyy
i. zzz (Wrong, there is too much space between
the i and the z)
ii. zzz (Wrong, there is too much space between
the ii and the z)
1. xxx (The 1. is correct, but the z should be
directly above it.)

** Correct (This is what I want)
1. xxx
2. xxx
a. yyy
b. yyy
i. zzz (Correct, the i is directly beneath the
y)
ii. zzz (Correct)
1. xxxx (Correct, the 1 is directly beneath the z)

The indents as defined in the styles are correct:
1. 0 and .25
a. .25 and .5
i. .5 and .75 following this pattern for the
remaining levels.

But w/ the ruler on you can see that for the 3rd level (i, ii, etc)
the tab is being set at 1.0 not .75 as it should. Interestingly this
only seems to happen for the numbering that use Roman numerals: i, ii,
iii, I, II, III, etc. It is as if Word is forcing extra space in
preparation for numbers like XXIII (23).

Where do I change this.

You're overshooting your tab stops. Seehttp://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/NumberAlignment.htm.

My dialogs don't look like the ones at the site. Specifically they
don't have a "Text Position / Tab Space After" option. I am running
Word 2000?

But you can modify "Aligned at" and "Indent at" in the dialog box. The
tab stop should follow. (If it doesn't, delete the tab stop from Format
| Style, Modify Style, Format, Tabs and then modify the numbering.)
