Numbering Steps in document

S

Susan

I have created different documents in Word 2003 for certain steps that I
plan to import into one document for posting to board. The document will
change depending upon needed response. What I would like to do is have each
document have a Step header and when these steps are combined into the final
document, the steps can be numbered sequentially automatically. How is the
best way to do this?

Hi Susan

Create a template, with a numbered style for the step heading. Use the
template to create the documents so you have this same style available to
all the document. When you bring the documents together (I would use Insert
File), you should find that the numbering automatically continues through
the document.

Word 2003 does try to be "clever" with pasting numbered paragraphs so if you
decide to assemble using copy and paste you might find you need to change
your Paste options (Tools > Options > Edit) or use Ctrl-Q to reset
paragraphs to style to get the numbering coming from the style.

You might try:

{SEQ Steps r\1} to number the very first step and
{SEQ Steps } for the remaining numbers.

Tip: Select the whole document and press F9 to update the fields if you move
the Steps around.
