Numbering/style conflict (I think)

I have a fairly simple template. At least I think so. Heading 1 and
Heading 2 are at 0" (not indented). Heading 3 is indented to 1.5
inches.

Heading 1 (chapter level) is numbered. Heading 2 and Heading 3
(sub-heads within a chapter) are not numbered.

I want Heading 3 to indent to 1.5 inches. I really, really do. Trouble
is, when I do it, change the style, save the style to the template,
then close my document and open it again, the Heading 3 has popped back
to the left margin (0" indent).

I've tried modifying the indent through the paragraph settings (right
click style name > Modify > Format > Paragraph > Indentation area, set
indent to 1.5").

I've also tried modifying the indent through the numbering settings
(right click style name > Modify > Format > Numbering > Customize, set
indent to 1.5")

No dice either way. When I change the indent to 1.5, save the style to
the template, save both the document and the template, close Word and
open it again... that pesky level 3 heading is back at 0" of indent.
I'm tempted to leave it there because I'm sick of spending time on
this. But WHY does it do this? Something is obviously overriding
something else, but I don't know what. I think it's got something to do
with styles and outline numbering... but I could be wrong. It's
happened before.

You need to set up the indentation of these using the numbering dialog.

Don't just try to do it; see: How to create numbered headings or outline
numbering in your Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)

If Heading 3 is not part of an outline-numbered list, it should be possible
to set the indent through Format | Paragraph, but I suspect that Tina has
selected one of the numbering schemes that automatically include all nine
levels of headings, and the numbering (or lack of it) is linked to the
styles, so your assessment is probably correct.

Tina, note that you must go into Format | Style through Heading 1 and edit
Heading 3/Level 3 from there to make sure that you are accessing the
outline-numbered list that Heading 3 is part of.

Hello Suzanne and Charles--

Thank you very much! It works. I've edited the indent level of the
styles through the numbering of Heading 1, and it works! Life is good.
I appreciate your help very much.

Suzanne, you mentioned that I had selected "one of the numbering
schemes that automatically include all nine levels of headings", and it
appears that I have. Trouble is, I only need three levels. The rest of
the heading levels are clutter in my style list but I don't know how to
get rid of them. Is it possible to make Heading 4 through Heading 9
disappear? Thanks.

If you have Word 2002 or 2003, you can specify exactly which styles you want
displayed (using the Custom setting in the Styles and Formatting task pane).
In previous versions, I'm afraid once headings are displayed in the Styles
list, it's impossible to remove them.

Thanks! It works. I never knew how to get rid of those heading styles I
didn't want. I appreciate that.
