Numbering: Tab space after

R

Rosemary

Hello,

In Word 2003, in the Bullets & Numbering Customize
screen, there is a field called "Tab space after" which
allows you to set the amount of space between the
paragraph number and the start of the text.

However, at my office we are still in Word 2000.
The "Tab space after" field does not exist in 2000. How
do I control the tab space after a paragraph number in
Word 2000? It automatically puts in a tab set of .75
after the paragraph number, which we don't want We want
1.0 instead. I try to delete the .75 by going through
Styles, Tabs, and deleting this tab set. But I can't
seem to control it consistently.

Thanks,
Rosemary

By default Word sets a tab stop where the hanging indent is. If that's not
where you want the tab, that can be a problem.

I see. Now, what about situations in which you don't
want to use a hanging indent at all - that is, you want
the first line (the one with the paragraph number) to be
indented, and you want the following lines to go back out
to the left margin? How would you set that up in 2000?

Thanks,
Rosemary

Since I jumped from Word 97 to Word 2002 and didn't do much with
autonumbering before Word 2002, I'm afraid I'm not the best person to answer
this. But I would have thought that in this instance you could set a tab
stop in the Format | Tabs dialog that would serve the purpose. ISTR that
that is what I used to do in earlier versions.

I'll give this a try: I'll set the tab stop I want
BEFORE customizing the numbering scheme and see if that
works. What I have been doing up until this point is
customizing the numbering first, which makes Word put in
its default set of .75 after the paragraph number. I
will instead set up the tabs I want in the style first,
then I will do the paragraph numbering.

Thanks very much for your help!

Generally speaking, tabs and indents set in the Numbering dialog override
those set in the Paragraph and Tabs dialogs, but I'm not sure how Word
handles a situation where there *is* no specific setting for a tab stop.

Hi Suzanne and Rosemary

If you record a macro from the list format dialogs that have no tab setting
it appears Word creates a tab stop to suit itself - usually the indent,
unless it 'thinks' there isn't enough room, in which case you get a .63cm
Jason tab.

Resetting the tab using the paragraph dialog is still doomed because of this
hidden setting in the list format - but you can edit the recorded macro and
change the tab setting there, then rerun. (I don't think this isn't the best
way of using VBA to set list formats, but it will probably work OK here).
