Numbering

I set up a style call it style 1 that I am trying to allocate lettering
"A,B,etc." to and for one thing, when I go in to modify the style, Word keeps
assigning it to an "Outline " numbering when I just want a simple list with
letters.

Second, after I put in a couple of lines, they get lebeled properly with A,
then B (on the second item), then i put in a single line with no lettering.

When I put in an additional line and try to letter it, it labels it as C. If
I right-click on it and tell it to restart the numbering, it doesn't. All it
does is screw up the paragraph indentation and the tabs. What is with this
#$!#@ piece of crap.

If I understand correctly, you have a series of numbered paras, you then
want an unnumbered para using the same alignment (indentation) as the
numbered paras?

The problem you are having is that when you remove the numbering using Skip
Numbering, you are changing the style from the numbered style (which has
hanging indent?) to an unnumbered style which has no hanging indentations.

The only way to do that would be to skip numbering and apply a style with
the required hanging indents.
