numbering

I am breaking my head with numbering pls help. I have tried Shauna Kelly
also but not succeeded.

I am having documents that I am modifying
My doc structure:

1.SCOPE(enter key)

1.1 This procedure outlines the requirements for practices and procedures to
protect employees from the hazards of entry into permit-required confined
space.(enter key)

2. PURPOSE

2.1 To provide a procedure that will inform, protect and guide those
individuals who work or have a potential to work in a confined space

I am having nearly 50 docs that I am modifying. I am now manually entering
the numbers and this is taking all my time.

Is there a way to automate or I have to do manually as the docs are already
present and I am reviewing and modifying the content.

You can create an outline-numbered list linked to styles and then apply the
appropriate styles to the existing paragraphs.
